Tips for Cleaning Your Kids' Bedroom Before School Starts - HappyCleans

Posted on August 25th, 2026

If you’re looking for ways to improve and streamline your everyday routine to make this brand-new school year less stressful for everyone in the family, we highly recommend starting with your children’s bedrooms.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), sleep health plays a pivotal role in kids’ performance in school. Students who get adequate hours and quality of bedtime are noticeably focused, inspired, energetic, and have more positive behavior compared to their peers who do not meet the recommended 9 to 12 hours of sleep every night.

A clean, organized bedroom can help children start their mornings with less stress and end their days in a space that feels calm and comfortable. Before your days get busier, take some time to give your little one’s room a complete reset.

Here’s a simple step-by-step cleaning guide to get your children’s bedroom school-ready.

1. Start With a Quick Declutter

Before you reach for the cleaning supplies, clear out the clutter. Have your child help gather toys, books, clothes, papers, and anything else that has accumulated around the room. Create simple piles:

  • Keep: Items they still use and love
  • Put Away: seasonal stuff, like summer toys or swimming gears, that should be kept in storage now.
  • Donate: Outgrown, unused, or multiple items
  • Trash/Recycle: Broken toys, paper clutter, or toy packaging

Getting children involved can also help them learn how to maintain their space throughout the school year. However, you can also just go with your better judgement and do the sorting alone if you feel decluttering can be emotionally distressing for them.

2. Clean and Curate Their Closet

School mornings move much faster when you’re not taking more than 10 minutes figuring out what to wear or looking for a missing pair of socks all the time. Here are some cleaning and organizing tips to streamline your kids’ closet and encourage independence, too.

  • Go through their closet and drawers and remove everything.
  • Wipe down all interior and exterior surfaces of each cabinet with a damp microfiber cloth. Keep doors open to air dry.
  • Inspect everything they have. Consider creating a small section specifically for school outfits. You can plan for the first few days of school ahead of time to make mornings a little smoother.
  • Remove clothes that are too small, worn out, or inappropriate for the season.
  • Fold or hang everyday school clothes where your child can easily reach them.

3. Clean the Desk or Study Area

If your child has a desk in their bedroom, give it a quick reset with these easy steps.

  • Remove old worksheets, dried-out markers, broken pencils, and anything that doesn’t belong.
  • Wipe down the desk surface and lamps.
  • Organize school supplies into containers or drawers.
  • Keep frequently used items, such as pencils, notebooks, and scissors, within easy reach. A clear workspace can make homework time feel more manageable.
  • Take out toys and non-school books away from this area to prevent them from getting distracted from their homework.

4. Dust From Top to Bottom

After decluttering, dust all visible surfaces. Start high and work your way down, so airborne dust particles don’t settle on places you’ve already cleaned. Use a damp microfiber cloth with an extendable handle. Focus on the following areas:

  • Shelves and bookcases
  • Lamps and light fixtures
  • Window sills
  • Headboards
  • Furniture
  • Baseboards

Don’t forget often-overlooked spots, such as the tops of dressers and underneath furniture.

5. Vacuum and Mop the Floors

Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly, paying special attention to areas underneath the bed, around the desk, and in corners. For hard floors, sweep or vacuum first, then mop as appropriate for the flooring. Moving lightweight furniture when possible can help you reach the dust and dirt that tend to collect underneath.

6. Refresh Bed Linens

  • Strip the bed and wash the sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and other washable bedding accessories according to their care instructions.
  • Vacuum the mattress and let it air out if possible. Don’t forget to flip the mattress every six months, if possible.
  • Take the pillows outside to put under the sun, a natural anti-bacterial. If it’s not sunny, check the care instructions of your pillows if you can put them in the dryer at the highest setting to kill potential bacteria or dust mites.
  • Replace bedding with fresh linens.
  • If your kids sleep with stuffed toys, don’t forget to wash and dry them since they collect dust and dirt as well.

7. Create Easy Systems for School Days

A clean room is easier to keep clean when everything has a designated place. Set up simple systems your child can actually maintain.

  • Keep a laundry hamper accessible.
  • Place a small bin near the desk.
  • Use baskets or bins for toys and books.
  • You can also create a designated spot for their backpack so it doesn’t end up on the floor or buried under clothes every afternoon.

8. Let Your Child Have a Say

Ask them what they want to keep, where they want their favorite things, and what would make their room easier to use. Giving children ownership over their space can make them more likely to maintain it.

For younger children, turn cleaning into a simple game: set a timer, play music, or see how quickly they can put away a certain number of toys.

9. Keep It Manageable During the School Year

Once the big reset is finished, maintaining the room doesn’t have to take hours. Encourage a simple daily routine with small habits that can keep the bedroom from becoming overwhelming again. Here’s an example:

  • Morning: Make the bed and put pajamas away.
  • After school: Put backpacks and shoes in their designated spots.
  • Evening: Tidy up toys, books, and clothes away before bedtime.
